Market Day

It's our first proper day here and we decided to brave the market and buy some food. Did quite well really, burbling away in pretend Spanish.  Everyone was helpful, even if a couple of them stared at me like I was from Mars, whilst I continued to destroy their language.

We bought some Calamari for a tapas, Bacalou (Cod) and veggies for dinner.  Anyway, I had started to get a big worried, as the only food stores I could find local, were tiny mini marts, either backstreet and looking a bit tatty or 'Artisan' shops at three times the normal price.    But then we found a large supermarket underneath El Corte Ingles (department store).  Sad really when you get excited about finding a supermarket...  but hey it made us happy.

Rod has also discovered their pastry shops!

So you can see already that a lot of this blog is going to be about food, but then that is usual for us.  The choice in the market was outstanding and I am looking forward to working my way through the stalls.

We walked for miles this afternoon through the old city, getting lost down alleyways, discovering little squares, old buildings.  It is such a lovely, elegant city.

This is our front door and the view into the square.

We are in a fabulous spot, near Cathedral Square, right in the heart of the old town.  There is one drawback of course....The Bells...... the bells... no doubt we will get used to them, but midnight is still waking us up.

  1. What great weather you are having. Snow and ice forecast, but it's not made it to Soton yet, phew!
